The tragic history of the Life and Death of Dr.Faustus is generally known as Dr.Faustus ,is an Elizabethan tragedy which was written by Christopher Marlowe. The play was directed by Mathew Dunster.
1) The play directed by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre ends with this scene... What does it signify?
In this picture wide wings of Lucifer represents the superiority of his evilness. At the end of the play we can see Lucifer with the wide wings which also suggest that after taking away Dr.Faustus’s soul he becomes more powerful than earlier he has. There is one another aspect also at the end of the play Dr.Faustus realizes that he chose a wrong path to satisfy his hunger of knowledge.
At that time he asks god for help and starts to regret but god is also helpless. Because of this realization he dies internally and that’s why Lucifer feels his own greatness or his victory over Dr.Faustus. So here in the conflict between goodness and evilness we can see that evilness overthrow the goodness.Lucifer wins Dr.Faustus with the help of Mephistophilis..
2) Is God present in the play? If yes, where and how? If No, why?
Yes, God is present in the play but God is not appears throughout the play. God is lives within some good character. Good angel and old man present in the play as a good character or we can say that as god also.Old man and Good angle both are an allegorical characters in the play.So we can say that old man is physical representation of an abstract concept. He begs him to stop sinning assuring him that his soul is still 'amiable',but Dr.Faustus continues on his path of necromancy. So we can say that God is invisibly visible throughout the play.
3) What reading and interpretation can be given to this image with reference to central theme of the play Dr. Faustus?
This image represents the Greek mythology which includes the two Greek characters Daedalus and Icarus. Daedalus is a crafter. As they are trying to escape from crete by means of wings which was constructed by means of wax and feathers.Daedalus warns his son Icarus about hubris and complacency. But he ignores his father's instruction after getting power and fly too near too the sun. Because of heating the wax wing melted and Icarus fell down into the sea.So we can say that here the fall of Icarus signifies the fall of Dr.Faustus.Hunger for the knowledge is good but here Dr.Faustus's over hunger of knowledge leads him towards the downfall.Dr.Faustus fell down from his higher position of knowledge.
4) How do you interpret this painting?
This is a modern portrayal of the Greek myth Daedalus and Icarus. This painting was painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting known as 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus'.As we know that after getting the power Icarus ignores her father's warning not to fly too near to the sun and fell down because his waxen wings melt down.So here i would like to interpret that behind the ship there is a drowning leg of Icarus.Icarus is drowning down but everyone is busy in their work no one has a time to look at his suffering. Here we can also see the harsh reality of world.
